DIO = (Average Inventory ÷ Cost of Goods Sold) × Number of Days

How to calculate average inventory

Average inventory is calculated by adding beginning inventory and ending inventory, then dividing the result by two:

Average Inventory = (Beginning Inventory + Ending Inventory) ÷ 2

Example calculation

If beginning inventory is $45,000, ending inventory is $55,000, annual COGS is $300,000, and the period contains 365 days:

Average Inventory = ($45,000 + $55,000) ÷ 2 = $50,000

DIO = ($50,000 ÷ $300,000) × 365 = 60.8 days
