Safety stock formula explained
Safety stock is the additional inventory kept on hand to protect against unexpected demand and supplier delays. One of the most widely used inventory planning methods calculates safety stock by comparing maximum demand during the longest lead time with expected demand during normal lead time.
Why this formula works
The formula estimates the extra inventory required to cover the difference between your worst-case scenario and your normal inventory consumption. This helps reduce the risk of stockouts when demand suddenly increases or suppliers deliver later than expected.
Example calculation
If your maximum daily sales are 35 units, your maximum lead time is 14 days, your average daily sales are 20 units, and your average lead time is 10 days, your safety stock is:
(35 × 14) − (20 × 10) = 290 units
